Mantras are important

You Are Enough

I’ve been repeating that phrase a lot lately. Training for a half marathon has been something that has challenged me in more ways than I thought it would. It’s caused me to become more confident in myself and at the same time feel very vulnerable.

Sierra_Boggess_Queens_TheatreSo in my obsession with Phantom of the Opera, which is still very much alive, I came across an interview with one of my favorite Broadway actresses, Sierra Boggess. As I watched the interview, she was answering questions on how she handles the fear that goes into performing. That’s when she said it: her Manta.

You Are Enough

But that isn’t the whole mantra. There’s more: “You Are Enough. You are so enough. It’s unbelievable how enough you are.”

She followed up by telling a story about one of her appearances as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. One of her co-stars had given her some wonderful advice, and she shared that with those watching the interview.

“Who you are, how you show up in this world, is enough as it is. You don’t have to add anything extra. You don’t have to prove anything to anybody.”

Those are words to live by. Especially in a world that tears you down at every corner. You are your only true supporter and you have to believe in yourself. I’ve use that mantra multiple times during my long runs, and if you smile while you say it and truly believe the words, they get you through the next steps.

Being confident in yourself and comfortable with who you are is the biggest gift you could ever give yourself. Because when you step in front of the mirror, you need to be able to deal with the reflection and not only see the bad things. You need to know that You Are Enough, just the way you are.
